Some think this was a wretched imitation of SERGEANT PEPPER. Mick and Keith did later criticize HMSR. I liked some of the tracks a lot. Link in comments.
Found this w/the 3D cover in the cut out bin?!? Sweet! I imagine it's most people's least favorite Stones album, but I like it. It is has some nice songs, 2000 Man, She's a Rainbow, 2000 Light Years, etc. Hey, there are worse albums to try to emulate...
You know, it would be easy for them to say, in later years, that they were merely satirizing the era, or something like that, but instead they owned it. In my opinion though, they out-psychedelicked many of their contemporaries! Only the original Floyd out-spaced "2000 Light Years From Home."
This, seriously, is my favorite Stones album. I got it for Christmas when it came out and have loved it ever since. The bootleg of the recording sessions is amazing!
I can see this being someone’s favorite Stones album. With all the visual and auditory colors, it’s be a great album for Christmas too. I rekkin’ the Mothers covered the Pepper parody base with We’re Only In It For The Money
If you look real close you can find the Beatles faces on the cover. George is on the left on Charlie's sleeve the others are somewhere in the lower right corner. If you find them you win a prize.
All four Beatles are there, buried in the fuzzy psychedelic haze on ether side of the Stones, a nod perhaps in response to the doll on the Sgt. Pepper cover clad in that 'Welcome The Rolling Stones' t-shirt. Some nights, tilting the 3D cover to search, I can find them all, other nights just John and George. Wonder why that is…
Here's a page with a picture that shows where they're hidden, for those w/o the 3D cover, or for those with that need a little help from their friends. http://www.feelnumb.com/2010/01/29/the-rolling-stones-returned-the-sgt-pepper-album-cover-tribute-to-the-beatles/
@Edfray: Yes, sir, PIPER is a masterpiece, and "Astronomy Domine" is the upper echelons.
Not to stray off-topic, but (up to) pre-Dark Side of the Moon 1972 Floyd is the Floyd at the height of their powers, before it became too heavily focused on the production. Those albums have their place, but I think they ended up going "commercial" in their own way, which was ironic.
I personally wish the Stones had spent more time in their brief whistle-stop of psychedelia!
This is a great record that does justice to the psychedelic context as much as any oyjer effort. The downfall was the Michael Cooper tie in. It looks like the hidden Beatles were nothing but a Sgt Pepper gatefold that had been sacrificed on the alter of insecurity. It would have been a much more esoteric procession had there been NO Beatles in the NON-crowd. Hiding in the flowers? Why///and every time I see the spray painted moon...I think Cooper was a lazy bum that was all about maximizing profit. The music didn't need graphic miracles and it certainly didn't need a guy riding on his own coattails AND his most recent album cover from a different contract. It's so very lonely your still a 1,000 light years from a miracle. The album is FAR better than anything delivered by Cooper. What's up with the labyrinth(Maze)??? A better cover would have been a Nikon on a tripod pointed at the person holding the album cover. I'm done! Thank you, Edfray! KC

I found this in a cut-out bin with the 3-dimensional cover and bought it. Give the maze a try if you like.
*Here you go*

This album is much better than Undercover and Dirty Work
Thanks for those great comments. I had a friend who insisted he could trace his way through the maze.

Is it PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN that you most recommend?

I found George alright. I need a better picture in order to find the others. And I also completely forgot the Mothers' Stones' Pepper's parody.

BTW, 'Paul is dead. I heard it on the radio'. The 60's equivalent to 'I read it on the internet' I s'poze.
Thanks rev.b. That page was what I was after.

Why don't we sing this all together?
That's all I have to say.
Thanks Edfray
