Frank Herbert, speaking frankly of his political theories (not opinions) and what he meant the original Dune trilogy to present to his readers. Political Ecology looks at the dynamics of power in societies while pointedly ignoring the details of local, transient propaganda, belief systems, etc. Political ecologists examine conflicts between powerful players, their relationship to great masses of passive participants, and repeating patterns in large scale human behavior. This discipline may potentially present opportunities for gaming the system in an effort to optimize outcomes. Any takers?

In re the Dune Redux, I do rather like it: A lot of details get cleaned up i.e. reordering scenes to make a more coherent narrative. On the minus side, a couple of the battle sequences need work: Like adding effects to simulate gunfire in a couple of battle scenes where, just for a few seconds here and there, extras in costume are mostly pointing props and going 'bang bang'. That's the only fault I find with the whole production, and IMO it's quite forgivable.

The Archive.Org link is dead, and will probably stay that way. Go to the first comment in this thread. Then click where it says *Here you go* to download the movie.

Hey edfray,

Can we talk a minute about the fantastic Sean Young being in 2 of the most enduring films of the 1980's it's a shame she wasn't cast as CatWoman....lol

Just recently saw the re-do here in 2021, overall they've done a good job. the movie feels (so far) like a rehash of Lynch's script, with LESS excess -- less exposition, less 'stomach-turning' moments, less over-acting to emphasize the dialogue, less space travel sequences. Most of which, in my opinion were what turned the movie-goers away in 1984. Lynch was at his most powerful then and it shows.

Chalamet is a much more competent assayer of Paul Atreides, than the than the then unknown Kyle MacLachlan who always looked to old to be the 'supposed' adolescent he is in the book. MacLachlan's wooden performance only emphasized the fact for me.

Director Villaneuve is a, shall we say less flashy storyteller than Lynch. I really had no sense of his direction in this film. For me,the "ornithopter" sequences were the highlight of "Dune - Part One" (2021).

The one thing I miss watching this new one, are the elaborate and massive sets Lynch had. and Lynch didn't have CGI .....

Cheers,

Thanks for your commentary OG - Sean was always absorbing and believable, and Kyle didn't work for me, ever. Oh well. Now may be a good moment for me to repost the archive.org version.
