Cloning Kits

This isn't about copying pets or people. Find an explanation of what Cloning Kits do in the comments.

Scientist and music fan here. The cloning they are talking about is sticking together bits of DNA. They’re not talking about cloning animals or people. The picture is misleading. It’s meant to show fragments of DNA that have been stuck together.

Thanks. Tell us more about the purpose if you please. I would only be guessing.

The idea is to make a big bit of DNA by sticking together smaller bits, and then put that into bacteria (that's the 5-alpha thing they mention). The bacteria then make lots of copies of the big bit of DNA. That's what's known as "cloning" in the lab. Now, the big bit of DNA can have many uses. For example, perhaps the insulin gene has been stuck in there. The big bit of DNA can now be put into a different kind of bacteria that will make lots of copies of insulin protein. The insulin could then be purified and given to diabetic people. Most of the time though the cloning is just done to make proteins for experiments in the lab, for all kinds of different research.
Apologies for the essay. It was weird to see an NEB ad in my music feed, so I had to comment!

Nice. That was one very fine explanation. I expect other blog visitors will enjoy this.
